The Foundation for Shamanic Studies
The Foundation for Shamanic Studies, (FSS), was founded by Michael Harner, (1929 - 2018), an anthropologist with extensive experience studying shamanic cultures worldwide and researching the distinctions and similarities among them. Michael Harner received his anthropology PhD in 1963 from the University of California, Berkeley, and has taught at various institutions, including UC Berkeley, Columbia , Yale , and the New School in New York, where he served as chair of the anthropology department. He also served as co-chair of anthropology at the New York Academy of Sciences. He left academia in 1987 in order to devote himself full-time to shamanism. In 2003 he received an honorary doctorate in recognition of his achievements in shamanic studies.
As a result of Michaels’ fieldwork studying shamanism, he developed an instructional method that focuses on the universal and near universal concepts and techniques found among shamanic cultures, which he called ‘Core Shamanism’. He describes his work and experiences in detail in ‘The Way of the Shaman’, published in 1980. This book serves as a model for the FSS Basic Workshop of the same name. In 2013 he published a companion work called ‘Cave and Cosmos’, which reflects on his work and experience during the intervening years. I highly recommend both of these excellent books.
I have long admired the work of Michael Harner and the FSS and have been a member of the Foundation since first taking the Basic Workshop with Michael in the 1990’s. I have continued to expand my training in the core shamanic method by completing the ‘Three Year Program of Advanced Initiations in Shamanism and Shamanic Healing’ as well as other FSS advanced trainings. In 2019, I will begin to offer instruction in Michael Harners Basic Workshop, The Way of the Shaman. This workshop will familiarize the participants with the work of Mr Harner and with basic core shamanic techniques and practices. This experiential workshop will include shamanic journeying and serves as a prerequisite for FSS advanced training workshops. You can see the schedule of workshop offerings at www.Shamanism.org or you can inquire on my contact page if you would like to sponsor a workshop. The FSS is an independent non-profit educational organization unconnected to Drummingcrow.com or Shamanic Voyages.
